Tell us about your career journey starting from when you graduated from dental school up to where you are today.

I graduated from dental school at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon. After that, I did a residency at UCLA in Los Angeles. After UCLA, I came back here and started practicing, and I've been here ever since.

Why did you choose dentistry as your profession?

It's kind of a funny story why I chose dentistry as my profession. I was in college. I had just gotten married to my amazing wife Julie, and I developed a toothache. She had me go to her cousin's husband, actually, who was a dentist in Tucson. I went to the dentist. He was working on my tooth, and he had a captive audience. While he was working on me, he was telling me about dentistry and what it was like, and it kind of piqued my interest. I started to shadow him and kind of see what he did on a daily basis, and I fell in love with it. Two years later, I was in dental school.

What is your favorite part of being a dentist?

My favorite part of the job is actually seeing the transformation that happens to people. Sometimesclients fill come in, and really their dental situation has them just in apathy in their life. They're embarrassed about the way that they look. They can't chew. They're embarrassed because they have a denture or something that comes in and out, and they don't want to socialize. They don't want to go outside. These are some of the people who actually really liked COVID time because they could wear a mask.

I love it when people come into our office, and they're like that, and we're able to help them, and in a very short period of time, they have this new, beautiful smile. It changes their lives. They can go socialize. They can go meet with people. They can go out and eat. That's my favorite part of the job.

What are your personal hobbies and interests outside of work?

Well, I've got seven kids, so that's my biggest hobby. That's what I do a lot of, hang out with my seven kids. But seriously, things that I do love: I'm kind of a big sports fan. I love all the local teams. I did go to the University of Arizona, so I'm a big Wildcat fan, and I love doing all that and sharing all that with my family.

What social networks are you active on?

Here at Matheson Dentistry & Implant Center, we're active on a lot of social networks. Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, that kind of thing. So go ahead and follow us on any of those!

What dental schools did you attend?

I went to dental school at Oregon Health Sciences University, which is located in Portland, Oregon. It's actually one of the really awesome dental schools in the country, and I went there from 2002 to 2006.

I did my residency at the University of California at Los Angeles, UCLA, and had a great experience there, and I loved my education. I'm so grateful for it. But I don't pretend that my education stopped at that point in time. That was, I feel, the beginning of my education, and I still very frequently take lots of continuing education to really stay on top of the game, so to speak, in dentistry.

Dentistry, like every other industry, changes a lot, and in the last 20 years, it's become a lot more modern, a lot more digital. We've really stayed up with the times, and our office looks a lot different from what it did 20 years ago. Back in the day, it was much more analog. Nowadays, it's much, much more digital.

Please tell us your work history in the dental field.

I've been here at Matheson Dentistry & Implant Center since 2007 and have worked here. I also, about five years ago, purchased another satellite office in Chandler. It's called Bellissimo Dentistry & Implant Center, and I do go over there once a week. We have another one of my associates who spends time over there.

In the last five to six years, we've added on other associates. One of the things that is really important to me is that even though we're growing, just like the rest of Queen Creek, and we have more associate dentists, more staff members, I really want to make sure that we continue the same level of care for each and every patient that comes into our office. That's something that's really critical for me. Getting all the right people who are on board with the way that I want to do things, which is doing excellent dentistry, all the while keeping a great atmosphere and a great relationship with patients, that's really a hallmark of what we are here at Matheson Dentistry & Implant Center. So whether that's me or one of the associates or one of the hygienists, we just want to make sure that that's the level of care that we're giving to everybody.

What are some of your favorite aspects of providing dental care to patients?

Some of my favorite aspects about providing dental care to patients: I really do like getting to know people over time. Dentistry is a cool industry from the standpoint of pretty much getting to see everybody every six months, and that's been really fun to see.

Just this morning, I talked to a person who had been here, and he's been coming here since he was a little boy, and now he's a grown man with a really cool mustache, kind of the Raleigh Fingers, you know, that little mustache. That's just kind of the fun part of it, getting to know people, getting to know families over time, seeing how people grow, helping them to hopefully avoid dental problems, and when they do have dental problems, helping to fix those. That's a fun part of the job.

What certifications, professional memberships, affiliations, or organizations do you hold or are a member of?

The first certification that I had was going to dental school. I really wanted to be able to do a more comprehensive level of dental care in my office. That's why I chose to do the residency that I did. We do a lot more in our office above and beyond just general dentistry. We also do a lot with surgery. We do a lot of dental implants. Consequently, I've had to take a lot of continuing education to make sure that we are providing top-notch service in all of these different fields of dentistry, not just one, because whether you come in and need a filling or you need some Botox or you need to replace some teeth with implants, we want to make sure that that's done at a very, very high level.

I, along with one of our associates, Dr. Brett, am what's called a diamond-level Doctor of Excellence with what's called the Yomi robot. One of the aspects of our practice is that we're very, very modern. We place our dental implants robotically at Matheson Dentistry & Implant Center. That's one of the things that we excel at, which is dental implantology, and placing implants robotically is actually a really big part of our practice. Both Dr. Brett and I have achieved diamond excellent status in that, so that's something that we're really proud of.

Along with achieving diamond excellent status with Yomi, we've also achieved platinum status with BioHorizons dental implant company. I've also received what's called the Hometown Heroes Award for healthcare providers in the town of Queen Creek. And last year, in 2025, the Queen Creek Independent made me the implant dentist of the year.
